Keychain Puzzles any novelty keychain fobs and charms are available and can be considered collectible – one can find scores of different designs, both modern and some decades old. Among them are a variety of keychain puzzles or key chain puzzles – the subject of this section. Keychain puzzles include interlocking, twisty, sliding piece, dexterity, and other types. Their most important characteristic is being small – according to experts three inches or less in the longest dimension and even that is pushing it. Even when no chain or cord is included, often there is a hole or a loop where one could be attached. In this section, I have focused on the interlocking variety of keychain puzzles though I do show some other types I’ve collected. Most collectors of keychain puzzles will admit certain small interlocking constructions into their collections even when the puzzles were not really intended to be hung on a keychain – I have included some examples here. In addition, some keychain “puzzles” either are very simple – consisting of only two pieces – or don’t interlock but rather press together.

One line rowle with the line upon it Two staples or bank hooks Two rules of two foot apiece Three mallets Two spare planing irons If a joiner had these tools, then a lutemaker could certainly have had them. A Spnaish inventory of a violero”s workshop tools is reproduced in Lute News 71, p. There is also the inventory of tools of a lutemaker in Leiden, published in Vlam, Chr. Surviving tools A few tools survive from my chosen period and indeed from much earlier; some Roman planes survive, as do Viking ones, and they seem remarkably familiar to the modern carpenter in their design.

Some of the Viking tools have been shown to be steel-tipped, for instance iron plane blades with steel edges forged on; plane blades were still being made like this in the 19th century, which helps to justify my use of Victorian blades for my reconstructed tools. Nautical disasters have preserved useful examples of preserved early tools, for instance planes and a carpenter”s rule survive from the Mary Rose, sunk in and partly recovered from the bed of the Solent in

John Algoe of the 10th Michigan Infantry. He enlisted in the 10th October 21, and was discharged March 8, for wounds received at Jonesboro. Michigan State University has a letter from Alex. Campbell of the 10th where he writes about visiting Algoe in the hospital and describes the visit as such, “Allen and I went to see Lieut. Algoe who is here wounded. He had his right under jaw shot away by a minie ball.

It has been a very painful wound but he is not nearly well and will probably be home in a month or so, poor fellow. His Country owes him and other wounded heroes a debt she never can repay”.

A patent for a magnetic clasp was applied for during the s but it did not see mass-market production Common Vintage Necklace Clasp Types by Era: Early s through the s: None of the information above will help you date a vintage necklace if someone has replaced the clasp. Sadly, this is very often the case. Clasps are susceptible to corrosion and breakage over time. This should not be surprising since clasps see more wear than the rest of a necklace due to continued opening and closure through the years.

Many clasp marriages are not malicious attempts to deceive but done out of necessity. Quite often an original clasp or a reproduction made from the proper material is just not available. The clasp might look newer than the rest of the findings or be made of a different material. Often, it will be the incorrect type of clasp for the time period in which the necklace was made. Any alterations from what was original will lower the value of the piece. The only way to maintain the value of a vintage necklace in need of a replacement is to find a clasp of identical age, style and material to the original.

Or they might not have the fortitude to undertake the task.

Multi-tool Multi-tool knives formerly consisted of variations on the American camper style or the Swiss Army knives manufactured by Victorinox and Wenger , however, the concept of a multitool knife has undergone a revolution thanks in part to an avalanche of new styles, sizes, and tool presentation concepts. These new varieties often incorporate a pair of pliers and other tools in conjunction with one or more knife blade styles, either locking or nonlocking.

Multitool knives often have more than one blade, including an assortment of knife blade edges serrated, plain, saws as well as a myriad of other tools such as bottle openers , corkscrews , and scissors. A large tool selection is the signature of the Swiss Army Knife.

From the Crimea to the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan there has been some sort of scandal involving the quality and usually parsimonious procurement of such materials. Having set the scene, this account will not dwell on the details, especially as it would take a large volume to recount, but there will be mention of relevant issues concerning the various weapons as they are described.

Although the last twenty years of the nineteenth century saw drastic changes in the weaponry and equipment of the British Army, by the early years of the next century, much of it had been either abolished or relegated to ceremonial uses only. With few exceptions, the weapons and equipment carried by the Dragoon Guards and Dragoons were the same as those carried by the entire cavalry arm, except the Household Cavalry. This was the sword carried in all the conflicts from the Abyssinian campaign to the Egyptian campaign.

The pattern sword was essentially a thrusting weapon and experiences against heavily robed native adversaries in the Third Afghan War and the Egyptian Campaign highlighted these shortcomings.

Drummond Hand-operated Shaper Having made, in , their first one-off lathe, by the Drummond Brothers, Arthur and Frank, were operating an engineering company from the outbuilding of a farmhouse some two-and-half miles from the centre of Guildford. Using just a couple of lathes, a small planing machine and a drill – all powered from an oil engine – the workshop began by turning out two types of machine: From these humble beginnings the company grew to become one of the largest employers in the area and, maintaining their independence until after the Second World War, became one of the best-known English machine-tool companies.

However, although Drummond always had a strong presence in the industrial market and expanded to supply many complex and ordinary machine tools for the motor and other trades including a now-rare small radial-arm drill , they were to become better known amongst the general public for their smaller machines starting, in with a flat-bed 3.

Although the early flat-bed lathes are often referred to as the “B Type” strictly speaking that designation did not apply until the appearance of a much-modified lathe in – and after the introduction of Round Bed in , a lathe Drummond branded the “A Type”.
